John Cockburn was probably a son of Colonel Samuel Cockburn [SSNE 4912]. He served as an ensign in Patrick Ruthven's [SSNE 3413] Kalmar regiment, then as a lieutenant in David Drummond's [SSNE 2396] Kalmar regiment.
