William Boswell studied and was a fellow at Jesus College, Cambridge, in 1606. He became seretary to Sir Edward Herbert, later, Lord Herbert of Cherbur. Boswell became an MP for Grantham in 1624 and 1625. In 1632 Boswell acted as Ambassador to the United Provinces at The Hague. He was knighted in 1633 and continued Carleton's policy at The Hague and supported the Gomarists against Barneveldt and the Remonstrants. He was still their until the eve of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms.
