John Wetton was amongst a group of Scottish officers (including John Forbes and James Leon) who had approached the Riksrad on 31 May 1639 but did not have a pass to do so. Although they were expelled, Queen Kristina's government offered help them with their unstated plight. This occurred at a time when many Scottish officers were seeking release from Swedish service in order to return to Scotland and join the Covenanting army
