Frederick Herman Schomberg was born in Heidelberg in 1615, his mother was Anne Sutton, daughter of Lord Dudley. He studied at Sedan, Paris and Leiden before enlisting as a volunteer in the army of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange in 1633. He also served with the Swedish army under Bernhard of Weimar in 1634 and under Rantzau in Franche-Comte in 1636. He was in Holstein and Friesland in 1637. In 1639 he was once more a lieutenant in the service of Frederick Henry. In 1645 he served Prince de Tarente in Holland and was first gentleman of the chamber to William II of Orange. Between 1652-4 he was captain of Scottish guards in the French army as marechal-de-camp. In 1655 he raised an infantry regiment in Germany as lieutenant general. He was also governor of Guislain. In 1657 he was governor of Bourbourg. In 1658 he was governor of Winoxbergen. In 1660 he was in England and created baron of Tetford by Charles II. In 1673 he again came to England. In 1688 he accompanied William of Orange to England, where he received the Order of the Garter and was made master general of ordnance. In 1689 he was created baron of Teyes, Earl of Brentford and Marquis of Harwich and Duke of Schomberg. In 1689 he was also commander of forces in Ireland where he was killed.
