HALL, JAMES [SSNE 1316]
Text source
Captain James Hall was recommended by King James VI and I to King Christian IV in 1605 for the realisation of his plan to send an expedition to Greenland. The expedition was led by John Cunningham [SSNE 1497] with the Englishman Hall serving as his pilot aboard Cunningham's ship Trøsten. They were joined by Captain John Knight [SSNE 1357] of the ship Katten who had Alexander Leyell [SSNE 1137] serving as his mate.
Hall was taken on as an experienced person, implying that he must have taken part in Davis' second Greenland expedition in 1587. In 1606 a further expedition took place in which Hall was also a member, engaged to bring back some material believed of value. Despite its worthlessness, a third trip was organised for 1607 on which Hall again was a member. He went back to Greenland yet again in 1612 supplied by an English company interested in trading possibilities. William Baffin was also on that journey. Hall was killed on 23 July 1612 in Greenland.
