John Churchill Duke of Marlborough (f.1650-1722) served as an envoy at Altranstadt to negotiate with the Swedes He accompanied the Duke of York to Scotland between 1679-82 as agent between the duke and Charles II. In 1689 he commanded the English troops in Flanders. In 1690 he became commander in chief in England and accompanied William III to Flanders in 1691. He also opened some negotiations with the exiled James VII and II. In 1701 he was assigned as senior diplomat in negotiations between the British kingdoms and the Dutch Republic. In 1702, the duke served as a diplomat in London and Germany variously negotiating between Britain, Hannover and Brandenburg-Prussia, a role he repeated in 1705 in London. Two years later, in 1707 he visited the elector of Hannover, Charles XII of Sweden and the king of Prussia (see extensive biography). Churchill also undertook a "quasi-diplomatic" mission to Denmark in June 1683, accompanying Prince George to England for the prince's marriage to Princess Anne. He met with the prince in Gluckstadt
