James Strachan paid taxes of 4th fjerding 1645 (himself, his wife, three maids), and in 1657. He served as a taxerborger (tax assessor) in 1645 and became the guardian for Jacob Gronnevold's daughter Regine by 9 January 1643, as well as for James Fleck's widow, Salome Due in March 1645. Strachan took charge of the Scottish Poor Box in October 1654 and with his wife paid part of the choir screen of St Olai 1652. His principle role was as a merchant. Through his dealings he had a claim of 20 daler for lead to Bernt Alexandersen Pottemager's estate in 1659. He married Else Adamsdatter who died by 26 February 1653. His second marriage was to Sidsele Bendsdatter (who survived him ). Strachan was dead by 3 August 1660, when his net assets amounted to 258 daler. Among the movables were 13 small pictures and portraits of himself and Else Adamsdatter.
