MSt (Res) courses in the School of History

The University of St Andrews has recently introduced the Masters of Studies by Research (MSt (Res)) as a new research-based Master’s degree. This is a one-year degree (two years for part-time students where part-time study is permitted), where students work towards a thesis of up to 30,000 words. The MSt (Res) provides an opportunity to spend a shorter time in a research environment either for a standalone degree or as preparation for a PhD.

Admission to research study is normally on the basis of a good Master’s degree (in the relevant discipline), and in principle, this condition also applies to the MSt (Res). However, the School of History will allow for the admission of candidates who neither have nor are currently working towards a (good) Master’s degree if all of the following conditions are met:

  • a first-class undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in the relevant discipline
  • strong evidence of relevant research skills,
  • a writing sample and research proposal of sufficiently high quality.
