History in the making.
Second-year PhD student Jonathan Gibson made history last night when he became the youngest ever winner of the BBC's long-running quiz show, Mastermind. 24-year old Jonathan won the Grand Final by a margin of 4 points over the runner-up, with an impressive score of 28. His specialist subject in last night's Grand Final was the comedy song-writing duo Flanders and Swann, where his in-depth knowledge secured him a perfect score of 11 points. Jonathan first came to St Andrews in 2017 as an M.Litt. student in Early Modern History, having previously done an undergraduate degree at Magdalen College, Oxford. Since his final undergraduate year, his focus has been on the period of the British revolution and the interregnum, and particularly the ways in which radically opposed constitutional visions were mediated through institutions of dialogue and debate.
Jonathan spoke to BBC Breakfast News this morning about his victory, which he said 'feels like a dream'. The interview can be viewed online on the BBC News website
The Mastermind Grand Final was broadcast on BBC2 at 8.00pm, Monday 26 April and is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
