Use devices and wifi in student accommodation
Updated on: 24 April 2024
Find out what devices can connect to the University’s wifi in student accommodation and what items you may want to leave at home.
Eduroam wifi
Available in all student halls of residence.
The IT team can help you set up your device.
Devices you can use
Most smartphones and devices with the latest available firmware. Check IT Services information for new students for details of specific devices and operating systems.
Windows phones and Chromebooks can connect to eduroam but you might need some help with the settings.
Devices that won't connect
If your device can’t download a security certificate using a web browser, it won’t be able to connect to eduroam.
This includes:
- wireless printers
- ebook readers (like Kindles)
- smart speakers
- smart TVs.
BT wifi is available but you need to pay for it if you are not a BT customer with wifi included in your plan.
TV
You are responsible for having a current and valid TV licence. Check the TV Licensing web page for students to find out when you need a licence and how to buy one.
Gaming
The ethernet sockets in your bedroom may work with gaming consoles.
The network is provided for your university studies. The University can’t guarantee that all games or consoles will be able to connect.
University managed accommodation
If wifi or internet access is not included in the accommodation costs, you will need to organise internet access privately with your preferred service provider.
