Updated on: 13 June 2024

Learn about gender identity and the support available to transgender and gender-nonconforming students.

Student Services is dedicated to supporting our transgender and gender-nonconforming students, ensuring St Andrews is welcoming and safe for everyone.

We recognise the challenges affecting your wellbeing, including discrimination and transphobia. We are dedicated to making a safe and inclusive space for everyone.

Transgender and gender-nonconforming students may face unique challenges at university due to academic pressures, mental health issues, and gender identity. These factors can make self-care and relationships more difficult in a new environment.

Finding a support system at university is important. It's essential to have people to turn to for non-judgmental support and guidance when needed.

How the University can help

  • Student Services can advise about specialised support available in the UK and offer a range of resources for your wellbeing and mental health.
  • Saints LGBT+, a subcommittee of the Students' Association, offers events and resources for LGBT+ students.
  • The Chaplaincy Pastoral Care Service is available to support all students, of any faith or none.

Other places to find help

  • Mermaids is a charity in the UK that supports transgender, non-binary, and gender-questioning young people.
  • Student Space is a mental health programme that offers support and resources for students.
