Sexual health at university
Updated on: 13 June 2024
Learn how to help keep yourself and others safe.
If you’re sexually active at university, it is important to stay healthy.
Using condoms is one way to prevent contracting and spreading a sexually transmitted infection (STI). Free condoms are available from the University.
Anyone can get a free STI test from the National Health Service (NHS). Getting tested regularly can prevent you passing on infections.
How the University can help
Student Services do not offer direct sexual health services such as testing or emergency contraception. Other help is available:
- Students can contact the Student Health Hub at the community hospital. Student Services staff provide this service. Email studenthealth@st-andrews.ac.uk or phone +44 (0)1334 46 5777.
- Student Services can offer a range of help including specialist support and resources for your wellbeing and mental health.
- The St Andrews Students’ Association also offers advice on sexual health.
Other places to find help
- The Mix, a UK support service for young people, has advice on talking to your partners about using condoms and preventing STIs.
- NHS Inform, Scotland’s national health information service, has sexual health advice and information on sexual health services offered through the NHS.
- Terrence Higgins Trust, a UK sexual health charity, offers free HIV self-testing kits to people living in Scotland and has guidance on other testing options available to you.
