Advice to help students stay motivated during their studies
Updated on: 13 June 2024
Learn how setting realistic goals can keep you motivated.
Most people come to university highly motivated to perform to a high standard and be successful.
Students often find motivation by creating goals and thinking of a successful future, but maintaining high levels of motivation can be tough.
Doubts can set in and you may start to feel overwhelmed or worry you will fail. In these moments, it is important to take a step back.
We encourage students to properly frame challenges. Just because something is challenging in the moment does not mean it can’t change in the future. So:
- Think less: “I don’t understand this essay topic”
- Think more: “I don’t understand this essay topic yet” and focus on the steps you can take to understand it
Motivation tips
- Set yourself one specific, achievable goal. You can do this by using the SMART Goals framework.
- Think about how to include that goal in your life and what you need to do to make it happen, then put a timeframe on it (such as a week).
- Break your goal into small, easy tasks and set regular reminders.
- Use your family and friends as support. Tell them about your goals and encourage them to help keep you motivated.
