Accessing hospitals and urgent or emergency care
Updated on: 28 March 2024
What to do when you have a minor or serious injury, and where to get help.
If you, or a person you are concerned about, are in immediate danger, call 999 (9-999 from an internal University phone). This number is the UK’s official emergency number. Police, fire or ambulance services will be sent to you, depending on the type of help you need.
If you are an international student, you’ll need to use a UK mobile SIM to access medical services.
Minor injuries
See a list of the minor injuries that can be treated at the Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at the St Andrews Community Hospital on Largo Road. Only minor injuries can be treated at this hospital.
Minor injuries do not include mental health problems, stomach or chest pains, pregnancy-related problems, difficulties with your breathing, or health issues that you have already discussed with your doctor.
The MIU can only treat injuries that have happened in the last seven days. If your injury is older than this, you need to make an appointment at the medical practice you are registered with.
To get help with a minor injury at the MIU at St Andrews Community Hospital:
- Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm: phone +44 (0)1334 465683.
- Monday to Friday after 6pm, or at the weekend: you need to phone 111 to contact NHS24 (part of the National Health Service) to make an appointment.
The NHS explain that you can also call 111 when you need:
- urgent care but your medical practice, pharmacy, or dentist are closed
- support with mental health distress.
If you have problems getting to the MIU in St Andrews:
- contact your warden if you live in a University hall of residence
- phone +44 (0)1334 46 8999, or email security@st-andrews.ac.uk, to contact the University’s Security and Response team.
More serious conditions
If you attend the MIU with a serious injury or condition, you will be referred to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department at one of these hospitals:
- Ninewells Hospital in Dundee
- Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy.
