Apply for a new student visa to continue studying in the UK

Updated on: 29 May 2024

Understand who can extend their stay in the UK with a new student visa and what to do if you cannot apply from the UK.

You must apply for a new visa, if you:

  • start a new programme
  • change institution
  • need more time to complete your course.

When and where you’ll need to apply from depends on your circumstances. You must contact the Student Immigration Service on advint@st-andrews.ac.uk to discuss your situation.

Applying from inside the UK

If you are already in the UK on a student visa, and the Student Immigration Service advises you can apply from inside the UK, you must read the UK government guidance on how to apply to extend your student visa.

Applying from outside the UK

Students who cannot extend their student visa from inside the UK, must leave the UK and apply for a new one. The UK government will expect students to apply for their new student visa from a country they have legal residency in.

Before you apply

  1. Read the University’s guidance on how to apply for a student visa.
  2. Email advint@st-andrews.ac.uk to request a new Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number.
