Apply for a student visa

Updated on: 29 May 2024

Understand who needs a student visa and what you need to do to get one.

Most international students need a student visa to study in the UK. The visa requirement depends on your:

  • nationality
  • course type
  • course duration.

Before you make any plans to travel, you must check if you need a student visa.

When to apply

To apply, you’ll need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number. The University will send instructions on how to get your CAS number when your University of St Andrews offer becomes unconditional.

Apply as soon as you get your CAS number. Read more about the CAS number and how long it takes to receive it.

How to apply

Most students will have to apply from outside the UK. If you are already studying in the UK on a student visa you may be able to apply from inside the UK to extend your visa.

You will also need to prepare documents for your application. Whether you need to submit these documents with your application depends on your nationality. If your country is listed under the UK Visas and Immigration 'differential evidence requirement', you do not need to provide any bank statements or educational certificates with your application.

Visa fees

All student visa applicants must pay the UK government’s visa application fee.

Students also need to pay an immigration healthcare surcharge to gain access to the National Health Service (NHS).

Visa decisions and collection

There can be delays in visa decisions. Do not book non-refundable flights or travel until you have received your visa.

If your application is successful you will be emailed the visa decision. This email will tell you how to collect or view your visa.
