Accommodation options explained: single, twin, triple, standard, en suite, self-catered and catered

Understand the words we use to describe the various types of University accommodation.
If you have been looking at University accommodation options, you have probably read words like ‘single’ or ‘en suite’ on our web pages. This guide explains them.
Bedrooms
There are three types of bedrooms in University accommodation:
Single
- Only one student lives in the bedroom.
- Bedroom has a single or double bed.
Twin
- Two students live in the same bedroom.
- Bedroom has two single beds or two double beds.
Triple
- Three students live in the same bedroom.
- Triple rooms have three single beds.

Standard or en suite
- A standard bedroom has shared toilet and shower facilities.
- An en suite bedroom has private toilet and shower facilities.
Self-catered or catered
- A self-catered accommodation contract does not include meals.
- A catered accommodation contract includes meals.
