Graduation Celebration Ceremonies June 2022 for the Class of 2021

How do I hire a gown/hood?

You are required to wear a gown and hood for the ceremony and this can be ordered from Ede and Ravenscroft at least 21 days prior to the graduation ceremony.

What should I wear for the ceremony?

Full academic dress should be worn. This consists of a gown and a hood plus one of the following:

  • A dark lounge suit or dress kilt outfit, white shirt with a white bow tie and dark shoes.
  • A dark skirt, dark trouser suit or dress kilt outfit, white shirt or blouse and dark shoes.
  • All graduates may wear the national costume or dress for their country of birth or ordinary residence.

The hood you will wear corresponds to the degree you have received. The what to wear webpage lists all degrees and their respective hoods.

Please note that jeans, trainers or other casual clothing are not permitted. You will be excluded from the ceremony if you are not wearing appropriate academic dress.

For health and safety reasons we may ask you to remove items that could cause you harm or interfere with the proceedings. Mortar boards are not worn at the University of St Andrews graduation ceremonies.

For further guidance, please refer to the following instructional video.

Where do I collect my gown/hood on the day of my ceremony?

Is there a Graduation Ball?

There will be a Graduation Ball for the Class of 2020 and 2021 on Saturday 25 June 2022. For information, please visit Graduation and Summer Balls webpage.

Further enquiries about the Ball should be addressed to union@st-andrews.ac.uk.

Is there parking close by?

St Andrews is a small town, and a car is not always necessary to get around. If you do decide to drive around St Andrews, please be aware that parking is limited and that it can be difficult to find a space at certain times of year. Much of the on-street parking in the centre of town is metered, and coins are required to pay.

There are a number of options for free parking in St Andrews, including the car park close to the Petheram Bridge roundabout, and car parks along the East and West Sands beaches. Some streets in the centre of St Andrews can also have free spaces, although these are usually quickly filled.

For further information, please see the getting to St Andrews webpage.

How do I get a letter to support a visa application?

Registry can provide letters to support visa applications. To request a letter, please email transcripts@st-andrews.ac.uk.
