Module Evaluation Questionnaires
Module Evaluation Questionnaires (MEQs) are online questionnaires sent to students at the end of each semester to collect data on student satisfaction. Each University module has a MEQ which consists of core questions set by the Proctor and additional School-specific questions. There are also different core questions for dissertation modules.
MEQs allows students to anonymously provide feedback on module content, structure, presentation, workload and resources. Once the MEQ submissions have closed, Academic Monitoring generate an evaluation report which is then delivered to staff and students through MMS. Summaries for each School or Department will also be considered by the Academic Monitoring Group.
The following documents contain the core MEQ questions:
-
Semester 1
- MMS deadline: Monday 4 November 2024 (by 08.00am)
- MEQs open: Monday 11 November 2024
- MEQs close: Friday 29 November 2024
Semester 2 and Full-year (Y1) modules
- MMS deadline: Monday 17 March 2025 (by 08.00am)
- MEQs open: Monday 24 March 2025
- MEQs close: Friday 11 April 2025
Summer (Dissertations)
- MMS deadline: Monday 11 August 2025 (by 08.00am)
- MEQs open: Monday 18 August 2025
- MEQs close: Friday 5 September 2025

Student feedback from module evaluation questionnaires is important for improving and enhancing the learning and teaching experience at St Andrews.
Listed below are some good practice tips that some Schools have used to improve their MEQ response rates:
- Setting some time aside during a lecture/tutorial to complete the questionnaire (often midway through the lecture/tutorial)
- Polite reminders to students in class and by email, indicating that you want as much feedback as possible to improve delivery of the module
- Give students some examples of improvements that have been made as a result of previous student feedback
- Showing appreciation to students for taking the time to complete MEQs and assuring them that their feedback is important and is acted upon
- Informing students of the response rates received to date and encourage those who haven't responded to do so
- Remind students that responses are anonymous
-
Schools
By Week 9 of each semester, every academic School is responsible for updating their School contact list and module and staff information in MMS. They should also submit any School-specific questions for the MEQs in EvaSys. Schools should also encourage students to complete the MEQs.
Academic Monitoring
Academic Monitoring is responsible for generating each MEQ based on MMS data, Proctor’s questions and any School-specific questions.
MMS team
In Week 10 of each semester, the MMS team open the MEQ and then close the questionnaire in Week 12.
-
It is not possible to amend or delete any of the core questions set by the Proctor. These questions are required by the University to be able to compare data across Schools.
Schools are allowed to submit up to five additional School-specific questions per MEQ, known as a question block. The same question block can also be used across multiple School modules. If a School wants to create or update a question block, any previously used question blocks should not be deleted as this will delete collected data.
-
If the information held on MMS is not updated before the deadline (e.g. staff contact list is inaccurate or modules are missing from the evaluation list) you should email academicmonitoring@st-andrews.ac.uk for further advice.
MMS should not be updated before seeking advice from Academic Monitoring as the data already collected could be compromised or lost.
Academic Monitoring should be informed of any modules which run outwith the normal MEQ time period. They will be able to advise on whether these modules can be evaluated at a later date.
-
MEQ reports are available on MMS immediately after MEQs have closed for submissions.
Module-level reports
Module-level reports are accessed on MMS through the Module Evaluation Questionnaire.
Module coordinators and administrators receive the complete module-level report which includes the free-text answers.
Lecturers and tutors receive their individual feedback plus the generic tick questions. They do not receive the free-text answers. Should you need access to the full report, you should contact the relevant module coordinator, Director of Teaching or administration office who will have access to the full report. Academic Monitoring cannot provide lecturers or tutors with individual reports that include free text answers.
Additional reports for Directors of Teaching
Detailed comparison reports are available to Directors of Teaching on MMS through the MEQ overview.
-
Any MEQ matters and information will be communicated via your School's MEQ contacts. Schools are responsible for ensuring their MEQ contact details are up to date. Any updates to the contact list should be emailed to academic monitoring@st-andrews.ac.uk
