Special circumstances - S-coding

S-coding is a process through which allowance can be made for special circumstances affecting the final grade for a module. It cannot be applied to modules at 1000 or 2000 level (except for students on the BA International Honours programme).

Where a passing module result is S-coded, you retain the credits but the grade may not be included in the degree classification calculation. Where a failing module result is S-coded, you have the opportunity for a further assessment in the module, which will be treated in the same way as the S-coded result (e.g. if that was a first attempt, then the further assessment will also be treated as a first attempt).

To request S-coding, you must make a formal request, by emailing a completed application form to the Director of Teaching of each relevant School, as soon as it is feasible to do so. Retrospective S-coding (after the module grade has been published) is only granted in exceptional circumstances.

There are limits on the proportion of credits in a degree programme that can be S-coded.
