NCAS-St Andrews Research Centre
In early June the University launched a new, long-term research partnership with NERC’s National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS). The NCAS-St Andrews Research Centre – the first of its kind in Scotland – will use state-of-the-art digital tools, including high-performance computing and machine learning, to better understand the atmosphere & climate and how they might change into the future. The Centre is a joint initiative between School of Earth of Environmental Sciences and the School of Mathematics and Statistics and will be led by Dr Ioana Colfescu (an NCAS scientist now based at St Andrews). Commenting on the collaboration, Dr Michael Byrne, academic co-lead of the new Centre, said: “We are delighted to join NCAS in this long-term collaboration, which builds on strong and growing expertise in the atmospheric and climate sciences across the University. The focus of the partnership will be to advance fundamental understanding of the climate system and extreme weather events using theory and cutting-edge computational techniques, research that will help societies to prepare for and adapt to a warmer future. We are excited to get started.” In the autumn, the Centre will begin recruiting research fellows and PhD students to join the team – stay tuned!
