PAMGuard: Open-source software to track whales underwater
We need your support
PAMGuard is world leading software for automatically detecting, classifying, and localising the natural sounds made by whales and dolphins. It is used around the world by researchers within academia, non-governmental organisations (NGO’s) and government research labs to estimate animal populations, study animal behaviour, and to mitigate the impacts of activities which might cause disturbance or harm to vulnerable species.
Since its first release in 2012, PAMGuard has been downloaded over 36,000 times. PAMGuard software is open source, meaning that anyone can copy and modify the source code and all software releases are free to download and use without restriction. We are continually developing and improving methods within PAMGuard and have recently added detectors for terrestrial species including bats and gibbons. PAMGuard maintenance and support is provided through the University of St Andrews by a team of specialists.
Other exciting developments include support for modern artificial intelligence / machine learning algorithms which improve detection capabilities for many species.
