Institute of Intellectual History

For almost a decade the St Andrews Institute of Intellectual History (IIS) has been collecting the papers of intellectual historians, acting as a hub for scholars globally, providing resources for the public and launching initiatives ranging from podcasts, prizes and lectures to conferences, journals and interviews.

Thanks to wonderful donations of rich scholarly resources we now have exceptional opportunities to expand our activities and cement the Institute’s leadership in the field. But we need support in order to realise these opportunities and to establish associated projects:

  1. The Winch Lectures in intellectual history: These will be given for the first time in October 2022 by Stefan Collini.
  2. St Andrews Enlightenment: The Institute holds a large number of transcriptions of manuscripts by luminaries of the enlightenment period and later. These have to be put online and made freely available to all.
  3. Archive of European Intellectual Life: Many prominent intellectuals, especially intellectual historians, have donated their unpublished books, lectures, papers, talks and articles to the Institute. As custodians of this unique material we must get it catalogued and made available wherever possible.
  4. Rounded Globe publications: The Institute wants to turn many of its holdings of unpublished work into freely downloadable ebooks via the Rounded Globe platform.

By these initiatives the Institute will provide invaluable resources to students and researchers around the world and also map the history of intellectual history and support the discipline.
