Students celebrate Raisin Monday in sustainable style

Almost a thousand students gathered on Lower College Lawn to take part in the annual Raisin Monday foam fight. Historically, students would bring gifts to their academic parents, but the tradition has - more recently - taken steps towards sustainability. This year, students instead donated items to the Storehouse food bank in St Andrews.

Stella Maris elected new University Rector

Congratulations to Stella Maris, who has been elected to the position of University Rector by St Andrews students. Stella is a recent graduate and for three years has served as Assessor to our current Rector, Dr Leyla Hussein. She will take up post officially on 1 November 2023.

St Andrews at the forefront of green hydrogen research

Angel Trains - the UK's largest rolling stock company - has partnered with the University to support an innovative hydrogen train project that could change the future of rail travel as we know it. Their donation of a hydrogen electrolyser - an integral part of our ongoing green hydrogen research - was marked at a recent event at Eden Campus.

Opening of the Colin Vincent Centre for Battery Technology

The eminent electrochemist Professor Colin Vincent officially opened the Centre for Battery Technology at the University's Eden Campus this month. The Centre is a world leader in the production of commercial-scale batteries and showcases the University's cutting-edge research in new battery chemistries.

New photos of abandoned island on display

A new series of images by the World Photographer of the Year 2021 will allow visitors to the University's Wardlaw Museum to explore a long-abandoned Scottish wilderness. The previously unseen works by Craig Easton are part of a new exhibition exploring the tiny island of Mingulay.

Remembering Sir Michael Bonallack

Sir Michael Bonallack OBE – Britain’s most decorated amateur golfer and honorary graduate of the University of St Andrews – has died aged 88. Sir Michael served on the board of the Robert T. Jones Trust for 16 years and as Chair of that board for 15 years. He was in addition a trustee of the Alfred Dunhill Links Foundation. Sir Michael will be remembered as a passionate and dedicated supporter of the University, and as being instrumental in raising funds for the Bobby Jones Scholarship endowment fund.

SaintsFunder

This month’s SaintsFunder project – the Peter Gow Memorial Lecture – aims to fund a biennial, inspirational and accessible lecture in Amerindian Studies to honour the legacy of Professor Peter Gow. Professor Gow was an influential and inspiring figure in Amazonian anthropology. The project is to be run by the University’s Centre for Amerindian, Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CAS).

The Andrew Carnegie Lecture Series

Former Poet Laureate Sir Andrew Motion FRSL will give the next lecture entitled ‘Poetry and the Subject’ on Wednesday 1 November at 6pm in the Booth Lecture Theatre, Medical Building, North Haugh, St Andrews. This event is free and open to all. Entry is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Join us in person or online for this year’s St Andrews Alumni Carol Service on Monday 4 December at 7pm (GMT) in St Salvator’s Chapel. The Service will be conducted by the University Chaplain – Revd Dr Donald MacEwan – and the carols led by the Renaissance Singers. Please mark your diary now for this festive highlight!

General Council

The next meeting of the General Council of the University of St Andrews will take place on Saturday 25 November at 10.30am in Parliament Hall, South Street, St Andrews, KY16 9JU. Tea and coffee will be available from 10am.


The Chancellor, Lord Campbell of Pittenweem, will preside and the Principal, Professor Dame Sally Mapstone, will deliver the University Address.


General Council members will be sent a link to the billet (meeting paper) before the meeting. Printed copies will be available at the meeting or can be requested in advance from the General Council Office.
