Pierre Poivre and the Networking Naturalists: Pioneering Environmentalists of the Eighteenth Century

Gillian Jones, MA (Hons) 1966

‘Pierre Poivre and the Networking Naturalists’ is a book of essays on pioneering environmentalists of the 18th century. The first, Pierre Poivre, (possibly the Peter Piper of tongue-twister fame) was also the first to detect climate change due to deforestation by colonists on the French island, Ile de France, now Mauritius. My subjects are from all quarters of the globe and include José Celestino Mutis and Francisco José de Caldas in Spain and Colombia, Alexander Anderson, curator of the Botanic Garden on St Vincent in the Caribbean, Philibert Commerson, French 'naturalists du Roi' who travelled with Bougainville to Tahiti among others.
