Sustainable Faith: a green gospel for the age of climate change
Nicola Bull, MLitt 2012
Climate change is often in the news and yet does not feature quite so regularly in our churches. This is strange when you consider that we talk and pray, Sunday by Sunday, about wars, about tragedies both international and local, and about natural disasters that cause loss of life. Many also recognise that some natural disasters, particularly flooding and drought, are exacerbated by the human activities that contribute to climate change.
Common sense also tells us that we are using up the natural resources of the planet far more quickly than we are able to recycle the materials used in manufacturing. Modern Western lifestyles, with their rampant consumerism, inbuilt obsolescence and a desire to always have the most up-to-date version of material possessions, are inherently unsustainable. So what should we in the churches be doing – what does our faith tell us in this situation?
