Tanks on the Streets? The Battle of George Square, Glasgow 1919

Louise Heren, MA 1989, PhD 2020

In January 1919, tanks were despatched to Glasgow after what became known as 'The Battle of George Square'.

Sent to quell the riot of Friday 31 January, by the time they arrived on 1 February, they were too late. Indeed, the soldiers ordered to Glasgow were also too late. The strike that had commenced on Monday 27 January had ended in riot and looting five days later.

These are the facts. But the myth recounts tanks and English soldiers on the streets sent by Churchill to squash the Scots; not of this is true.

This book is the first attempt in a century to summarise these events in close detail, and piece all available sources into a coherent narrative.
