Rowing After the White Whale

James Adair, MA 2004

In 2011 two St Andrews graduates and friends rowed across the Indian Ocean, the first pair to do so unsupported. Despite having no rowing or sailing experience they completed the voyage in 116 days, although the last day saw them capsize and nearly lose the boat and nearly their lives.

This is the story of moonbows and meteor showers, passing whales and thieving fish, lurking sharks and giant squid; it is part adventure narrative, part blue water history, part meditation on nature and part memoir.James Adair and Ben Stenning both graduated in 2004 with very mediocre 2:1s.
