Stolen Shroud

Stewart Lamont, B.Sc.(1968), B.D. (1971)

In Turin the famous Shroud (believed by some to have wrapped the body of Jesus) is on exhibition in the Cathedral and is stolen as it is returned to the Chapel in which it is normally kept. Medieval historian Quillan reads about the theft when he arrives in Paris to give a series of summer seminars at the Sorbonne. He is staying in an apartment block in the Opera/Montmartre district and recognises the Albanian owner of the antique business beneath his flat as having been in the vicinity of Turin Cathedral the day before the theft. When an old lady is found dead in her locked room in the apartment above his, Quillan becomes convinced that her murder is linked to the gang in the antique shop. Unable to resist investigating further on his own, Quillan discovers how the Shroud was smuggled from Turin, hidden in the cellars of his apartment block, then transferred to a warehouse. Before Max can warn Commissaire Janvier of the Police Judiciaire where the hand-over of the Shroud will take place, he finds himself confronted by the mystery buyer who commissioned the theft and his own life in danger.
