The Rape of Tamar

Paul Whitworth, MA 1973

Paul Whitworth's translation of Tirso de Molina's Golden Age Spanish comedia opened to critical acclaim at the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith, London in 1992. It was the first time the play had been staged in English. The events of the play are drawn from the Old Testament account of the rape of Tamar by her half-brother, Amnon - King David's son and heir. Tirso's tragicomic handling of this material is highly theatrical and questions the assumptions behind the genre of revenge drama.
