St Andrews: Camelot of Golf

Nigel Morecroft, MA 1980

As a historian and golfer, Nigel Morecroft has had a long-standing interest in St Andrews as a place and a golfing destination. The book St Andrews: Camelot of Golf was born out of his curiosity to try and answer the question: what are the factors that make St Andrews special? His answer is to compare St Andrews to Camelot – a mythical beautiful place associated with spirituality and enlightenment with legendary individuals including the heroic Knights of the Round Table.

Here is the story of how a small town established a remarkable reputation and influence, and why it continues to draw in adoring pilgrims even today in the shape of students, golfers and tourists.

The illustrations – mainly photographs, paintings and posters - in the book are an important part of the story showing how and why St Andrews became prominent over the last 200 years. Consequently, the book was lovingly designed to show these images to best effect in a very high quality publication that is designed both to peruse and to read.

Nigel and his family have many connections with St Andrews stretching back almost 50 years. He was a student at the University in the 1970s, met and married his wife at St Andrews, their son went to St Andrews, he had a professional relationship with the University when he worked in finance, he sat on the University Court between 2012 and 2020 and the Morecroft family have been a donor to the University. In addition, he is a member of the New Golf Club and the family own a property in the town.

The book can be purchased from bookshops in St Andrews, or via the Great British Bookshop or from https://nigelmorecroft.com/
