The essays in We Are Not Okay explore what it means to grow up poor in America. Some are deeply personal, dealing with my own childhood; others look more broadly at the way the United States treats its poor and the impact of this lack of humanity on our politics. Taken together, they explore whether it is possible to outrun the shame of growing up in poverty. My hope is that the collection will shed some light on — or at least pose some provocative questions about — what it means to grow up poor in America and how it affects your perspective on yourself, on other people and on the world.
