Living there

Getting there and getting around

Bergen is situated on the western coast of Norway, and can be reached by plane, directly from many European destinations or via Oslo Gardermoen. It is also possible to take a flight to Oslo, and then take the train further to Bergen. Bergen Airport Flesland (BGO) is well connected with other European cities and airline hubs. The city of Bergen is therefore easily accessible.

The easiest way from Bergen Airport to the city centre is to take the Light Rail going approximately every 10 minute from the Terminal to the city centre (approximately 45 min. journey).

Accommodation

New exchange students are guaranteed housing in a student home provided that you apply for a room within given deadlines and follow the instructions given here.

Short term students may also apply for accommodation at the student hostels, but you will not be prioritised. Further information can be found on Bergen's webpage.

Please note that St Andrews is unable to guarantee housing at any of our partner institutions. Guidance on finding accommodation abroad is available on the Global Office webpage.

Student services and orientation

The University of Bergen offers a variety of counselling and advice services, both academic and non-academic. Sammen is a student welfare organisation that works in Bergen University to provide further student support, from mental health services to career counselling.

As a student at the University of Bergen you are automatically a member of the Student Welfare Organisation (SIB). You become a member upon payment of the semester fee, which is also required in order to register for exams. Short term exchange students are exempted from paying the semester fee.

Please be aware that student support services will be different across all of our partner universities.
