At a glance

The ANNS center at Qatar University aims to advance the communication skills of its participants in Modern Standard Arabic. The program's objectives are as follows:
  • To contribute to the continuing dialogue between nations and world cultures and to foster tolerance and open interaction among them.
  • To promote the Arabic language and to provide students with opportunities to learn about the role of Arabic in human history and the development of modern society.

  • Established : 1973
    Student Population : 2400
    History : The programme was founded in 1986 and has since served over 600 students. Since the Academic Year 2006-07, the program has operated as its own Department, independent of the Arabic Language Department.

Students on degree programmes in the following subject areas may apply to study abroad during their Junior Honours year at Arabic for Non-Native Speakers (ANNS) at Qatar University:

Note: Joint Honours students may only apply for a full year abroad if BOTH subjects are listed above. Joint Honours students applying for one semester must seek permission from both Schools.

Your studies abroad

Partner Course Catalogue : Classes meet for 20-23 hours per week. Friday and Saturday are official days-off. In order to determine your current level of Arabic, you will sit for a placement test held at the beginning of the academic year in September. You can find the course catalgoue here.

Assessment methods may vary across partners and could include class participation, continuous assessment in the form of homework and final exams. Places available may vary from year to year depending on the exchange balance. Numbers for the following academic year will be confirmed at the information meeting.

Living there

Getting there and getting around

A meet and greet service is available to international students on arrival at Doha International Airport.

University shuttle buses run regularly between the student dormitories and the campus. A shopping mall is located next to the dormitories.

Accommodation

The University dormitories include a single room, 3 meals per day and bus transportation to and from campus. Limited spaces are available in the University dormitories and such rooms are subject to availability. Male and female dorms are completely separate, but courses are mixed. All dorm bedrooms are air-conditioned and include a single bed, study desk, rolling chair, wardrobe, and bedside table. One quilt, pillow and a bed sheet set are also provided. All dorms have wireless Internet, which is free of charge. A hot plate and fridge are not present in the bedrooms; however, a common kitchen and fridge are available on the first floor in the female dorm. Student services and orientation

Orientation is mandatory for all students. Orientation will allow you to gather information about your classes and the policies that govern your academic life at Qatar University. You will meet other students and faculty in your program and get to know your way around campus. You will also be given your class schedule and other important documents during the orientation. You will be able to ask any questions you might have about the program, Qatar University, or life in Qatar. New international students can also subscribe to one of the Qatar University Support Groups.
