Located in downtown Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, approximately 150 miles south of Washington DC, The College of William and Mary (W&M), founded in 1693, is the second oldest in the USA. It is a ‘Public Ivy’ with around 8400 students (6200 undergraduates). Its campus is spread over 1200 acres and includes woodlands and a lake. William & Mary is notable for its many firsts in American Higher education. Williamsburg is a lively college and tourist town of historic importance with a population of 20,000 (incl. students). The town has a unique allure, with its rich historical heritage blending with its contemporary charm in a setting full of nature.

Places available : 10 semester places (or five full year places) will be available at William and Mary in the academic year 2025-26.

Places available may vary from year to year depending on the exchange balance. Numbers for the following academic year will be confirmed at the information meeting.

Living there

Getting there and getting around

There are three airports close to Williamsburg which are convenient for travel: Richmond International, Norfolk International and Newport News/ Williamsburg airport.

Exchange students are responsible for their own travel arrangements to and from the College. Comprehensive instructions are given in the welcome package.

There is a free College shuttle bus which connects the main campus with shopping areas in Williamsburg.

The downtown area of Williamsburg is walkable.

Accommodation

Accommodation is guaranteed. Information regarding housing on campus is sent out in the welcome package and students should apply online as soon as they receive this information.

Once your form has been received, you will be allocated a shared room on campus automatically.

Student services and orientation

You can find out more information about the services and support available to students during their exchange experience through William and Mary Student Services

Please note that students studying at William & Mary will be charged a fee of around $500 at the start of the semester which covers items such the new student orientation, ID card, international orientation fee, transcripts, and sheets and pillow. Please note that these costs may change each year.

Please be aware that student support services will be different across all of our partner universities.

Overall living costs at William & Mary will be very much dependent on your lifestyle. It is also important to factor in the cost of any travel that you may wish to do while abroad when considering finance.

Insurance

It is mandatory to take the William & Mary health insurance plan.
