Postgraduate taught course in Classics

• Training and supervision

  The School offers all MLitt students the chance to take intensive beginners’ and intermediate Latin and Greek courses.

  MLitt students with interests in material culture are encouraged to spend time at the British School at Rome or the British School in Athens. If you have questions about language study, study abroad, or other course content, please email the Taught Postgraduate Secretary, classpgt@st-andrews.ac.uk. 

  After two semesters of taught modules, MLitt students undertake their research projects. They are assigned an individual member of staff with relevant expertise, who supervises the 15,000 word dissertation. 

• Community

  MLitt students come to the School from all over the world, from a wide variety of educational backgrounds. They are an integral part of the Classics postgraduate community. They participate in postgraduate seminars and meet with postgraduate students of Classics at other Scottish universities (StAGE - a consortium of the universities of St Andrews, Glasgow and Edinburgh). They are a crucial part of the School’s wider research culture. They have the chance to meet and network with PhD students and research staff, both from the School and those who visit as part of the School's regular research programme and associated conferences and workshops.

• Further study

  Many taught postgraduate students stay on to pursue research in their chosen area, either here in St Andrews or further afield. Opportunities for further study in the School of Classics can be found on the postgraduate research page.
