Research areas

Francesca is exploring the cultural and diplomatic exchanges between Italian and North African and Middle Eastern courts during the 15th and early 16th centuries. Her research connects artistic depictions of exotic animals with archival and literary evidence. Her focus in on the courts of Ferrara, Mantua, Milan, and Urbino, and their correspondence and gift exchanges with north African powers such as Tunisia and the Mamluk Sultanate. By considering the use, maintenance, and visual proliferation of exotic animals as diplomatic currency, Francesca is engaging with Italian court art within a global context.
