Surrealism on Film.
PhD Candidate Brittany Jones has helped organise an exciting programme of Surrealism on Film at Dundee Contemporary Arts, Sat 21 September – Sun 20 October, celebrating the centenary of the Surrealist manifesto and during which audiences will enjoy a special introduction to each film.
Brittany will introduce the first screening, a double-bill of Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí’s provocative masterpiece Un Chien Andalou and Buñuel’s follow-up L’Âge d’or, which was censored by the French authorities until 1981. The programme also includes the Czech classics Daisies and Murdering the Devil, four recently restored films by Man Ray, Hitchcock's iconic Spellbound, for which Dalí contributed audacious dream sequences, David Lynch’s body horror Eraserhead, and Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One, a one-of-a-kind Afro surrealist docu-fiction.
The DCA will also welcome Glasgow musicians Hoolan Ensemble to present Le Regard: An evening celebrating women in surrealist silent film, including two live performances to accompany screenings of The Seashell and the Clergyman and Foreign Body. The season concludes on Sun 20 October with a screening of Fellini's mesmerising 8½.
