African Modernism in America
Dr Kate Cowcher has contributed an essay and two artist biographies to the catalogue for the major travelling exhibition, African Modernism in America, 1947-1967. The exhibition opened on October 7th at Fisk University Galleries in Nashville, TN. It will travel to Saint Louis, Washington, D.C. and Cincinnati in 2023-4. For the catalogue, Kate contributed biographies of the Ethiopian artists Skunder Boghossian and Mammo Tessema, as well as the essay 'Sam Ntiro, Skunder Boghossian and Modern African Art in Turbulent Times.' The latter is an exploration of the parallel, yet divergent journeys to the US made by Tanzania's Sam Ntiro and Ethiopia's Skunder Boghossian, reflecting, in particular, on the careers of the two within the wider formative context of the jet age.
