Title: Grounding Gender in Gender Identity

Abstract: Contra recent proposals, for instance by Dembroff (2018) and Jenkins (2023), I’ll argue for the Real Gender assumption, namely for its implication that the reason why one should classify trans people as the gender they identify with is that they are the gender they identify with, in all contexts. I will argue for this claim by arguing in favour of a “gender-identity first” account of gender (Cosker-Rowland, 2023). Finally, I will argue that we should classify people according to the gender they identify with, regardless of whether the operative gender kinds (Dembroff, 2018) are just or unjust.
