Whitehorn Hall undergraduate accommodation

In Whitehorn Hall, undergraduate students live in a single standard room with a shared bathroom and kitchen, or in an en suite room with meals provided.

There are 97 single catered en suite rooms, 87 single self-catered standard rooms (with an option to add catering), and no shared rooms.

£12,041, including £3,083 catering cost. Intersemester and spring break will be on a self-catered basis.

Fees vary depending on whether you are staying in catered or self-catered accommodation, whether your room is standard or en suite, and whether you are sharing or not. Hall information

Whitehorn Hall offers self-catered standard and catered en suite accommodation to undergraduates, on a 38-week contract which includes intersemester and spring break on a self-catered basis.

Meals for students on catered en suite contracts are:

  • Monday to Friday: breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Saturday and Sunday: breakfast and lunch.

The hall has four floors. Each floor has a dining and lounge area.

Location

Whitehorn Hall is within the grounds of University Hall on the western side of town. It's close to the University's sports centre and the North Haugh, a 15-minute walk to the centre of town and local amenities, and a 20-minute walk to the Old Course and West Sands beach.

Many students use bikes to travel around the town to save money on public transport, live a healthy lifestyle, and contribute to sustainability. A large secure bicycle shelter is provided at Whitehorn Hall. Find out more about travelling to and around St Andrews.

What is Whitehorn Hall like?

Whitehorn Hall is a modern hall in a quiet location, next to University Hall. The residents of these two halls are free to share each other's facilities, social spaces and games rooms.

The University Hall committee and extended wardennial team organise events for both halls and create a strong community feel.

Catered students from Whitehorn Hall take all their meals in the dining room of University Hall.

Bedroom

Bedding is not included. You can bring your own duvet, blankets and pillow cases, or order bedding before arriving in St Andrews. Find out more on the bedding information page.

All bedrooms for undergraduates in Whitehorn Hall have small double beds and are single-occupancy.

Standard bedroom

Single standard rooms have access to shared showers.

En suite bedroom

These rooms have an en suite bathroom.

Each student also has:

  • desk, chair and desk lighting
  • mattress and mattress protector
  • shelves, wardrobe and drawer unit
  • general waste and recycling bins.

Facilities

Whitehorn Hall offers various facilities for students to use for studying or socialising.

Main social space

A large open space on the ground floor, with tables, chairs and sofas for relaxing, socialising, events and informal studying.


Study spaces

Dedicated group study rooms are available on the first floor, with data points, whiteboards and TV screens to assist students with their presentation work. More study rooms are available on each floor for formal or informal studying.


Private dining room

Residents can book this room for their own special events, like a birthday party or a special meal with friends. The room has a kitchen, tables and chairs.


Kitchen and lounges

Each kitchen and lounge is allocated to five students, including students on catered contracts.

The kitchen has an induction hob, an oven, a large fridge-freezer, a microwave, a kettle and several storage cupboards.

It includes a dining and lounge area with a table and chairs, sofas and a coffee table. There is a TV in the lounge area.

Cinema room

The cinema room is an informal room with a large TV screen and comfortable seating.


Games room

A large games room with seating and various games for relaxing.


Music room

The music room is a sound-insulated room for residents to practise their musical instruments individually or with a small group.


Internet and television

You may need a TV Licence. See Use devices and wifi in student accommodation for more information on this and other equipment.


Cleaning

You are expected to keep your residence clean and tidy. University staff may carry out regular inspections. Check the Cleaning your student accommodation guide for more information.


Laundry

The laundry room has card-operated washers and dryers. There are ironing facilities in the nearby drying room.

Whitehorn Hall residents can access the facilities in University Hall.


Parking

There are two disabled parking spaces on St Leonard's Road.

Most students choose to cycle or walk in St Andrews as University buildings and other places in town are not too far away from each other. There is secure bike storage on site. Learn more about how to travel to and around St Andrews.

To park a car in a University building, you must get a student car parking permit.

Support

Each Residence has a team of staff who manage reception, porter and housekeeping teams and work closely with Catering, Halls Life and wardens and the Student Committee to ensure the hall operates smoothly and to help you enjoy your time in student accommodation. 

From 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, these staff can answer questions about your accommodation and help you get help from other parts of the University. 

All University halls of residence also have their own Halls Life and wardennial team who live within the hall and are trained to support students with advice on anything from academic matters through to first aid. New students will meet their warden and team of assistant wardens during their moving-in weekend.
