Undergraduate students can choose catered accommodation in single or shared standard rooms or shared en suite rooms. 

This hall has a rich history and features three wings, one of which is for women only.

Fees vary depending on whether you are staying in catered or self-catered accommodation, whether your room is standard or en suite, and whether you are sharing or not. Hall information

University Hall is divided into three parts: the Wardlaw Wing for women only, and the Lumsden and Old wings for all students. It mainly offers single bedrooms, but a few shared rooms are available for new undergraduate students.

University Hall rooms all have single beds. There are several types of rooms available, including:

  • 236 single standard rooms
  • 26 shared standard rooms for two residents
  • 7 shared en suite rooms for two residents
  • 1 shared standard room for three residents
  • 3 shared en suite rooms for three residents

Location

University Hall is on the western side of town, near the North Haugh and Saints Sport, the University sports centre. It is a 15-minute walk to the centre of town and a 20-minute walk to the West Sands beach.

What is University Hall like?

University Hall has a vibrant community atmosphere thanks to its relatively small size. The student committee organises events including:

  • movie nights
  • pizza parties
  • game nights
  • sports competitions
  • the traditional Uni Hall Ball.

Bedroom

Bedding is not included. You can bring your own duvet, blankets and pillow cases, or order bedding before arriving in St Andrews. Find out more on the bedding information page.

Bedroom options

  • a single standard bedroom has a single bed
  • a shared standard bedroom has two single beds
  • a shared en suite bedroom has two single beds, and an en suite shower and toilet
  • in a shared room for three residents, you will each have a single bed and, if you are in a shared en suite room, an en suite shower and toilet

 

Each student also has:

  • desk, chair and desk lighting
  • mattress and mattress protector
  • shelves, wardrobe and drawer unit
  • general waste and recycling bins.

Facilities

University Hall residents can use the facilities at the nearby Whitehorn Hall.    

Food

19 meals are provided each week:

  • Monday to Friday: breakfast, lunch and dinner
  • Saturday and Sunday: breakfast and lunch. 

Kitchen

The kitchens are shared and have:

  • kettle
  • fridge
  • oven or microwave
  • basin, cutlery tray and sink tidy
  • steam iron and ironing board
  • dustpan and brush, broom, mop and bucket, and vacuum cleaner
  • general waste and recycling bins.

Laundry

Card-operated washers and dryers are available.


Libraries

The hall has two antique libraries dedicated to the arts and sciences. Both are beautiful spaces in which to study and relax.


Computer room

The computer room has 12 computers open all hours.


Common room

There are communal areas, including the West Common Room, TV room, games room, and several party rooms.


Parking

There is no student parking available.

Most students choose to cycle or walk in St Andrews as University buildings and other places in town are not too far away from each other. Learn more about how to travel to and around St Andrews.

To park a car in a University building, you must get a student car parking permit.


Internet and television

You may need a TV Licence. See Use devices and wifi in student accommodation for more information on this and other equipment.


Cleaning

You are expected to keep your residence clean and tidy. University staff may carry out regular inspections. Check the Cleaning your student accommodation guide for more information.

Support

Each Residence has a team of staff who manage reception, porter and housekeeping teams and work closely with Catering, Halls Life and wardens and the Student Committee to ensure the hall operates smoothly and to help you enjoy your time in student accommodation. 

From 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, these staff can answer questions about your accommodation and help you get help from other parts of the University. 

All University halls of residence also have their own Halls Life and wardennial team who live within the hall and are trained to support students with advice on anything from academic matters through to first aid. New students will meet their warden and team of assistant wardens during their moving-in weekend.
