Gannochy House undergraduate accommodation

Gannochy House is a modern annexe of St Salvator's Hall where undergraduate students live in standard catered or self-catered accommodation in single rooms, sharing bathrooms and kitchens.

Although built in the 1970s, the building has recently been refurbished to a high standard.

Accommodation in Gannochy House is not available during Christmas vacation and the intersemester break, but you will not have to remove your belongings from your room. Dates will be in your accommodation contract.

Fees vary depending on whether you are staying in catered or self-catered accommodation, whether your room is standard or en suite, and whether you are sharing or not. Hall information

An annexe of St Salvator's Hall, Gannochy House has the old traditions of St Salvator's but with a modern feel.

The building is in the town centre, close to the University's library and Arts buildings.

There are 85 single standard rooms in Gannochy House and no shared rooms.

Location

Gannochy House is beside St Salvator’s Quadrangle. It is between The Scores and North Street.

It is very close to St Andrews Castle and Castle Sands beach.

What is Gannochy House like?

Residents of the main building, St Salvator's (known as Sallies), and the Gannochy House annexe are all undergraduate students and share facilities and a Halls Life team.

Gannochy House residents are encouraged to take part in Sallies' traditions and social events. The hall committee organises weekly events during the year from quiz nights and wine tasting to the annual Sallies Hall Ball.

Bedroom

Bedding is not included. Students can bring their own duvet, blankets and pillow cases, or order bedding before arriving in St Andrews. Find out more on the bedding information page.

Standard bedroom

The rooms are not shared. You will have a single bed and the following furniture:

  • desk, chair and desk lighting
  • mattress and mattress protector
  • bookcase, wardrobe and drawer unit
  • general waste and recycling bins.

Facilities

Gannochy House residents can use the facilities in St Salvator's Hall.

Food

Students on catered accommodation get 19 meals each week:

Monday to Friday: breakfast, lunch and dinner
Saturday and Sunday: breakfast and lunch.


Kitchen

The kitchen is shared and has:

  • oven and electric cooker
  • fridge and freezer
  • kettle, pots and pans
  • basin, cutlery tray and sink tidy
  • dustpan and brush, broom, mop and bucket, and vacuum cleaner
  • steam iron and ironing board
  • general waste and recycling bins.

Laundry

The laundry room in St Salvator’s Hall has four washers and four dryers. The laundry room in Gannochy House has two washers and two dryers.

Washers and dryers are card-operated. 


Computer room

There is a computer room that students can access at all hours.


Common rooms

You can relax and chat in the main common room, which includes a piano. There is also a games room with a snooker table, TV and projector.


Library and reading room

There is a library and a reading room, offering quiet spaces to study in.


Internet and television

Cleaning

You are expected to keep your residence clean and tidy. University staff may carry out regular inspections. Check the Cleaning your student accommodation guide for more information.


Parking

The closest parking can be found on North Street and The Scores.

Most students choose to cycle or walk in St Andrews as University buildings and other places in town are not too far away from each other. There is secure bike storage on site. Learn more about how to travel to and around St Andrews.

To park a car in a University building, you must get a student car parking permit.

Support

Each Residence has a team of staff who manage reception, porter and housekeeping teams and work closely with Catering, Halls Life and wardens and the Student Committee to ensure the hall operates smoothly and to help you enjoy your time in student accommodation. 

From 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, these staff can answer questions about your accommodation and help you get help from other parts of the University. 

All University halls of residence also have their own Halls Life and wardennial team who live within the hall and are trained to support students with advice on anything from academic matters through to first aid. New students will meet their warden and team of assistant wardens during their moving-in weekend.
