Rental cost reviews
Student rents are reviewed annually in a process of dialogue between the Students’ Association President and the University's Director of Residential and Business Services (RBS).
Following these discussions, it has been agreed that accommodation costs will be increased by 7.5% for the academic year 2024-2025.
The UK Retail Price Index (all items), which is the main measure we use to set the rents, was at the time of setting the rents in September 2023 8.5%. To support this below-RPI increase, RBS has been asked to consider some changes to services.
Housekeeping arrangements in traditional halls will change from September 2024. Staff will clean shared bathrooms and kitchens (unless they are part of a flat) as well as corridors and other public areas. Bedrooms will not be cleaned and students will be responsible for disposing of rubbish and recycling. In line with en suite accommodation, monthly cleanliness and safety checks will be carried out.
Some students prefer the option to rent their accommodation on a self-catered contract. This will continue to be possible for all accommodation at David Russell Apartments and Fife Park Apartments (1,685 beds).
All students will have the option of:
- the catering package at the time of accepting their offer
- going fully self-catered
- a pay-as-you-go meal card option
The University will continue to support students with the cost-of-living crisis by increasing the accommodation award available to those students who need that financial support.
Ben Stuart, RBS Director
Barry Will, President of the Students’ Association, 2023-2024
Refurbishment
Due to a rolling refurbishment programme, some postgraduate residents may be required to move during the summers of 2024 and 2025.
End of tenancy
Please check your contract to confirm the date you are required to move out. It is not normally possible to change this date, as rooms are required for incoming students.
If for academic reasons, for example, extension to dissertation submission date, you need to extend your stay for a short period, please contact student accommodation at accommodation@st-andrews.ac.uk as soon as possible.
We cannot guarantee that accommodation will be available and you may be required to move rooms. Extensions beyond the start of the next academic year are extremely unlikely to be available and you should make alternative arrangements.
