Deans Court postgraduate accommodation

Deans Court dates to the 15th century. It is across from the cathedral ruins, in an area in the centre of town steeped in history.

It is only a five-minute walk from the Library, and several Arts buildings.   

The Deans Court complex consists of 61 rooms. The main building accommodates 21 students, with the remaining 40 rooms located in seven other buildings. 

Deans Court is available only to postgraduate students.

Fees vary depending on whether you are staying in catered or self-catered accommodation, whether your room is standard or en suite, and whether you are sharing or not. Hall information

All bedrooms in Deans Court are for one person and all are catered.  

Most share shower rooms and toilets. 

Bedrooms are graded by band according to the facilities they offer and rents are reflected in the band. Check the application form for details.

Location

Deans Court is near the historic ruins of the castle and cathedral, in the centre of town.

What is Deans Court like?

Deans Court benefits from a good sense of community with a committee who run events throughout the year.

Residents have access to a large garden where barbecues are held during the warmer months. 

Bedroom

Bedding is not included. You can bring your own duvet, blankets and pillow cases, or order bedding before arriving in St Andrews. Find out more on the bedding information page.

Standard bedrooms

In standard bedrooms, you will have a single bed with:

  • desk, chair and desk lighting
  • mattress and mattress protector
  • bookcase, wardrobe and drawer unit
  • general waste and recycling bins.

Standard bedroom locations

  • Single rooms: 19 in the main building and 31 in annexes.
  • Single rooms in two-bedroom apartments: two in the main building (Garden Flat) and six in annexes (5, 7 and 9 North Street). 
  • Single en suite rooms: three in annexes (two with shower and sink only, and one with shower, sink and toilet). 

Studio

Studios are ideal for couples and individuals who want more privacy. Studios are self-contained and include a furnished bedroom with double bed, a kitchen recess and an en suite shower and toilet.

The Deans Court studio is in the main building and has:

  • desk, chair and desk lighting
  • shelves, wardrobe and drawer unit
  • mattress and mattress protector
  • fridge and freezer
  • electric oven and induction hob
  • kettle, pots and pans
  • steam iron and ironing board
  • basin, cutlery tray and sink tidy
  • dustpan and brush, broom, mop and bucket, and vacuum cleaner
  • general waste and recycling bins.

Deans Court has the following in the main building for all residents to use:

Kitchen

You have access to a shared kitchen. Information about what kitchen items you may bring with you can be found on the What to pack web page


Food

Residents receive 15 meals per week, with breakfast, lunch and dinner served Monday to Friday. Meals are not provided during intersemester break. 


Common room 

The common room has a piano, television, comfortable seating and a dining table and chairs.


Library 

The library is off the common room. There is also a small computer room.   


Laundry 

The laundry room contains two washers and two dryers which are operated with an app.


Outdoor

Large garden with barbecues.


Parking

Residents have free parking on North Street and South Street.

Most students choose to cycle or walk in St Andrews as University buildings and other places in town are not too far away from each other. Learn more about how to travel to and around St Andrews.

To park a car in a University building, you must get a student car parking permit.


 

Internet and television

You may need a TV Licence. See Use devices and wifi in student accommodation for more information on this and other equipment. 


Cleaning

You are expected to keep your residence clean and tidy. University staff may carry out regular inspections. Check the Cleaning your student accommodation guide for more information.

  • No 7 – kitchen, sitting room area, two bedrooms and shower room 
  • No 9 – open-plan kitchen and sitting room area, two bedrooms and shower room 
  • Garden apartment – kitchen, two bedrooms and shower room 
  • Studio apartment – kitchen, open-plan bedroom and sitting room area, and shower room.

Support

Each Residence has a team of staff who manage reception, porter and housekeeping teams and work closely with Catering, Halls Life and wardens and the Student Committee to ensure the hall operates smoothly and to help you enjoy your time in student accommodation. 

From 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, these staff can answer questions about your accommodation and help you get help from other parts of the University. 

During your studies at the University of St Andrews there may be times when you need some help and advice. The University provides a wide range of support services to help you achieve academic success and personal fulfillment.
