Module results advice

What will happen if the marking of my work has been boycotted?

All results that have been affected by the marking and assessment boycott (MAB) will be reported on your student record as Z.

Now that the boycott is over there is a new reporting deadline for module results affected by the MAB from Semester 2, academic year 2022-2023, and any PGT dissertation grades which have been delayed by the MAB. This has been set for Friday 22 September 2023 and we are aiming for the majority of outstanding final grades to be released to students on Tuesday 26 September 2023. If, on receiving your results, you have any queries on your current module choices, or your future study please contact your Adviser of Studies in the first instance.

What does a "Z" outcome mean in the context of the MAB?

"Z" stands for unresolved. It may be unresolved due to the MAB or unresolved for another reason in which case you will receive a personal communication. However, if submitted work is not yet fully marked due to the MAB but has been verified as having met the standard for a pass, you will be awarded credit for the module in question but not a numerical grade.  This will enable you to receive an interim classification and graduate. In such cases, the final numerical grade and final classification will be reported as soon as possible.

I will have finished my studies and would be due to graduate in November, but don’t have all my work fully graded. Can I still apply to graduate?

If you have achieved all the necessary credits, the Graduation Office will invite you to graduate as normal. Should this not be the case, Registry will advise you accordingly.

I am a current undergraduate student at St Andrews, holding a conditional offer for a taught postgraduate degree at St Andrews. Who can I contact if I am unsure if I have met my offer conditions?

Contact registry-pgt@st-andrews.ac.uk.

I am a current taught postgraduate student at St Andrews, holding a conditional offer for a research postgraduate degree at St Andrews. Who can I contact if I am unsure if I have met my offer conditions?

Contact registry-pgr@st-andrews.ac.uk.

I am a current PGT student with modules coded as Z due to the MAB, will I be able to graduate?

Modules for which all of the required assessment has been submitted but which remain unresolved because of the marking boycott are reported as Z (which means unresolved).

Now that the boycott is over, a new reporting deadline for outstanding module results delayed by the MAB from Semester 2, academic year 2022-2023 and any MAB delayed PGT dissertation grades has been set for Friday 22 September 2023. We are planning for these grades to be released to students on Tuesday 26 September 2023. Classification and degree outcomes for MAB affected students will be published as soon as possible thereafter.

Any student who still has unreported grades by Friday 29 September 2023 will receive an interim classification which we will then update once grades have been reported.

What does a "0F" outcome mean here?

"0F" stands for Fail. This outcome means that you will not be awarded credit for this module. The final numerical grade will be added later and depending on this grade you will be offered reassessment if the grade is greater than or equal to a 4.0 Fail.

Your right to reassessment is therefore not changed by the marking and assessment boycott. You will have the opportunity to appeal any module outcome.

What is the difference between credits and grades in this context?

In order to achieve a degree, students have to gain the right number of credits (at the right level). Credit is gained when a module is passed (for any grade of 7.0 or above). If a student is short of credit, they cannot usually achieve the degree they are aiming for.

Can I appeal these outcomes?

You will be able to appeal these outcomes – just like any outcomes – according to the appeals policy. Please be aware of the relevant deadlines (5 working days after the publication of the module outcome).  Students cannot graduate while an appeal is pending.

Will I be awarded my degree as scheduled?

Yes, if you have passed the required modules you will be able to graduate as scheduled.

How will my UG degree be classified?

Your degree will be classified as normal. The S-coding policy and its application is unchanged by the marking and assessment boycott.

Will I get a degree certificate and transcript during my graduation?

You will be issued with a final degree certificate, classification, and a transcript during your graduation.

What is the difference between a degree certificate and the transcript?

The degree certificate records the level (General, Honours or Masters) and class of degree awarded to a graduate. The transcript lists all the modules taken, the grades for these modules and certain other achievements.

When will my "Z" outcomes be fully marked and finalised?

Now that the boycott is over, a new reporting deadline for outstanding module results from Semester 2, academic year 2022-2023, has been set for Friday 22 September 2023 and we are planning for the majority of outstanding final grades to be released to students on Tuesday 26 September 2023. If, on receiving your results, you have any queries on your current module choices, or your future study please contact your Adviser of Studies in the first instance.

Can I appeal the final outcome of my previous "Z" module outcomes?

Once you have been notified of your final module outcomes, you will, exceptionally, be allowed to submit an appeal against these outcomes, even though you will already have graduated.

The other stipulations of the appeals policy including those relating to the time limit for submitting an appeal following notification of results will apply.

What happens if my Undergraduate final classification goes up as a result of the final marking of my Z grades?

If your Undergraduate classification goes up after the final marking of your "Z" modules, you will receive a new, final classification. The Registry team will contact you to make necessary arrangements for the return of the interim degree certificate and the postage of your new documents.

What happens if my Undergraduate final classification goes down as a result of the final marking of my 0Z grades?

Your transcript will show the final updated grades for all your modules, but your overall final classification will not be lowered from the "interim classification" you were awarded. This does not apply if the final marking process produces evidence of academic misconduct, in which case both the module grade and the classification may be lowered. The Registry team will contact you to arrange delivery of your transcript.

Will my return for my next year of study in September 2023 be affected?

No student will be prevented from progressing into their next year of study, from entering Honours, or from being admitted to a module with prerequisites, while they have provisional "0Z" grades on their record.

I am a visiting student/study abroad student about to return and my home institution will require finalised module outcomes by a particular deadline. What will you do to help me?

The University is in contact with partner institutions to provide information and guidance on the marking and assessment boycott.

If you have modules for which you have received a "Z" outcome due to the MAB, and are in need of a transcript, please email assessment@st-andrews.ac.uk and let us know the relevant deadline by which you need your transcript.  We will do our best to finalise your grades on a case-by-case basis.

Will you help me to explain to employers or other universities what "Z" grades and "interim classification" mean?

Yes. The Registry team will provide you with an official letter to explain the situation, on request. Please email transcripts@st-andrews.ac.uk.

Will Academic Prizes be awarded?

Yes. Prizes, including the Deans’ List will be awarded once final grades have been reported.
