Deaf or Hard of Hearing

The Disability Team provides a confidential support service for disabled students, including individuals who are D/deaf or have a hearing impairment. Medical information might be required to ensure that appropriate support is put in place or to support an application for Disabled Students’ Allowance.

The University has installed loop systems in specific lecture theatres and can also provide a portable loop system for other teaching environments.  Individual support arrangements can be discussed with the Disability Team and may include measures from the Health & Safety Office relevant to emergency evacuation from halls of residence and other university buildings.  Teaching and exam arrangements can be discussed with a Disability Adviser.

If you require BSL sign language interpreters or electronic note takers please contact the Disability Team as soon as possible as we may have difficulty sourcing this level of support in the St Andrews geographical area.  Although we will strive to meet the support required we cannot guarantee this level of provision.

Disabled Students ordinarily resident in the UK may be eligible for Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA). The Disability Team can offer guidance on the process and help with applications.  Further information regarding DSA is available from your respective funding authority:

If you decide not to apply for DSA, or are not eligible for it, the Disability Team will still be able to advise you on what support is available to you so please get in touch with us.

You can make an appointment to speak a Disability Adviser iby emailing disability@st-andrews.ac.uk.
