British Academy/Leverhulme funds for accountability research

4 April 2024

In May 2024, Dr Mahmoud Elmarzouky, Senior Lecturer in Accounting, will begin a new research project called, 'An inconsequential measure of pain? Corporate crime, enforcement action, and surrogates of deterrence'.

The project has been funded by the British Academy/Leverhulme Small Research Grants scheme, which supports primary research in the humanities and social sciences.

Dr Elmarzouky will be working with Professor Gary Fooks from University of Bristol (PI) and Dr Tom Mills from Aston University.

The project analyses disclosures of corporate crimes. It looks into the consequences of legal enforcement on corporations, their executives and shareholders in the UK. The project team will compare enforcement impacts across various regulatory sectors and on different corporate stakeholders.

The research will make a significant contribution to discussions on enforcement efficacy and elite accountability in the UK.

The project is funded until December 2025.
