Research areas

I am the current research technician for the Volcanic Eruptions and Impacts group at St Andrews. The group aims to use ice core records to better understand the frequency and magnitude climatic perturbations derived from volcanic activity. We focus particularly on tephra and sulphur isotopes. As the technician, I work at the "coal face" of this scientific endeavour, dealing with the preparation and analysis of the sulphur isotope composition of ice core samples by multi-collector inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). I also work on measuring sulphur concentrations by ion chromatography and identifying volcanic tephra horizons in the ice core record.
