Biography
I am a Visiting Senior Research Fellow working on the Shared Island Stories between Scotland and the Caribbean Project. My substantive position is as a senior lecturer in Caribbean History at the University of the West Indies’ St. Augustine Campus. I have held the positions of Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Head of the History Department and University Dean. I am past President of the Association of Caribbean Historians and a current member of the Executive Committee.
I have held Visiting Fellowships at the University of Iowa and the University of Cambridge and I am very pleased to add the University of St. Andrews to these rewarding experiences. I have also been part of several international research and technical teams.
Research areas
My research focus involves a revisionary approach to plantation and enslavement systems in the Caribbean. During this research fellowship I will apply this approach to the connections between the Caribbean and Scotland with special concentration on the past connections among our island communities.
My publications include: Turning Tides Caribbean Intersections in the Americas and Beyond; Beyond Tradition, Reinterpreting the Caribbean Historical Experience; The Caribbean in the Atlantic World and Capitalism and Slavery Fifty Years Later.
My interest in Museology connected me to the School of Art History and the University of St Andrews. It has led to involvement in projects connected to historical representation. I have also been a member of the Board of the National Museum and Art Gallery of Trinidad and Tobago.
